Connecticut offers same-day voter registration, meaning that voters are able to register to vote in person at their polling place on Election Day on November 3, 2026. Voters can register to vote online or by mail by October 16, 2026.

Eligibility

In order to register to vote in Connecticut, you must be a U.S. citizen, be a resident of Connecticut, be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, and not a currently incarcerated felon.

  • Connecticut residents who are currently 17 and turning 18 by Election Day can register to vote.
  • College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in Connecticut or vote in their home state, but they may only be registered and vote at one location.

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Connecticut for the 2026 midterm election is October 16, 2026, which is 18 days before the election. If voters are registering to vote by mail, their registration form must be postmarked by this date. Connecticut offers same-day voter registration at voters’ polling locations on Election Day on November 3, 2026.

 

Voter Registration Process

There are three methods of voter registration in Connecticut: online registration, mailing in a completed printable application, or in-person registration.

  • Connecticut automatically registers eligible individuals to vote through the Department of Motor Vehicles. Check if you are already registered to vote in Connecticut here.
  • Connecticut residents can register to vote in-person by the voter registration deadline at their Registrar of Voters office  or at their town’s Same-Day Registration location during the early voting period or on Election Day.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

In Connecticut, registered voters must meet certain criteria to be eligible to vote by mail. Valid reasons to vote-by-mail can be found here. Click here to access Connecticut’s absentee voting application.

  • The deadline to request an absentee by-mail ballot is the day prior to Election Day (November 4, 2024), but it is recommended to do so 7 days before (October 29, 2024).
  • If returned in-person, ballots are due the end of the business day the day before the election (November 5, 2024). If returned by mail, ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day.
  • After applying to vote absentee, an absentee ballot will be mailed 31 days before the 2024 general election.

In-Person Early Voting Practices

Connecticut offers in-person early voting to all registered Connecticut voters. Find information on in-person early voting here.

  • Early in-person absentee voting begins 14 days prior (October 21, 2024) and continues through the day before election day (November 3, 2024). Early voting takes place between 10 am and 6 pm on every day other than October 29 and 31, when it takes place between 8 am and 8 pm.
  • Every city/town will have at least 1 early voting location. Find your early and absentee in-person voting locations here.
  • Connecticut residents may register to vote during the early voting period at early voting locations.
