Eligibility

In order to register to vote in Delaware, you must be a U.S. Citizen, a Delaware resident, at least 18 years old by Election Day, not adjudged mentally incompetent, and not serving a sentence for a felony conviction.

  • Delaware residents who are currently 17 and turning 18 by Election Day can register to vote.
  • College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in Delaware or vote in their home state, but they may only be registered and vote at one location.
  • Convicted felons are allowed to vote if they have completed their sentence or were not convicted of a disqualifying felony. A list of disqualifying felonies can be found here.

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Delaware for the 2026 midterm election is October 10, 2026, which is 24 days before the election. If voters are registering to vote by mail, their registration form must be postmarked by this date.

 

Voter Registration Process

There are three methods of voter registration in Delaware: online registration, mailing, faxing, or emailing in a completed printable application to your Department’s Office, or in-person registration.

  • Delaware residents can register in-person at any Department’s Office, a Division of Motor Vehicle offices,  Social Service Centers, or Armed Forces Recruitment Offices.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

Anyone who is registered to vote in the state of Delaware may request a mail-in ballot without providing a reason. Click here to access Delaware’s absentee voting application.

  • The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is 4 days before Election Day (November 1, 2024).
  • All absentee ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted.

In-Person Early Voting Practices

Election Day Practices

On Election Day, the polls are open 7am-8pm. You can find more information about voting on Election Day in Delaware here.

  • Voters must present acceptable forms of non-photo or photo ID, such as a Delaware Driver’s License, a Delaware Identification Card, a U.S. Passport, a signed Polling Place card, a signed Social Security card, a signed vehicle registration, or a signed credit card with photo.
