Your voter registration application must be received on or by October 24, 2020 if you are registering online or by mail. However, Iowa offers same day in-person voter registration.
Eligibility
In order to register to vote in Iowa, you must be a U.S. citizen, an Iowa resident, and at least 17 years old at the time of registration (must be 18 to vote).
- In Iowa, you cannot claim the right to vote if registered in another place or judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court. Furthermore, a person’s voter registration is cancelled if the person is convicted of a felony. See information about voting rights restoration here.

Deadline
The deadline to register vote online or by mail in Iowa for the General Election (November 3, 2020) is October 24, 2020. Iowa also has same day voter registration.

Iowa offers early and absentee by-mail voting. Voters are encouraged to consider voting using one of these methods in order to minimize their risk of exposure to COVID-19.
Vote-By-Mail Practices
All registered Iowa voters are eligible to vote by mail. Click here to access Iowa’s absentee ballot request form. This form must be returned your county auditor.
- A written application for a mailed absentee ballot must be received by the voter’s County Auditor no later than 5:00 p.m. 10 days before (October 24, 2020) the November 3, 2020 General Election.
- Your vote by-mail ballot must be received by your County Auditor by the time the polls close on election day (9 pm on November 3, 2020).

Early Voting
Iowa offers early voting.
- Voting early in-person is available beginning 29 days before the November 3rd 2020 General Election, and goes until the day before election day (November 2, 2020). Early voting takes place at the county auditor’s office.
- In-person absentee voting at the auditor’s office on Election Day is not available unless the polls open at noon. If the polls do open at noon, it is possible to cast an absentee ballot on election day from 8 am – 11 am.
