Eligibility

In order to register to vote you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of a Louisiana parish, be at least 17 years old, not be under an order of imprisonment for conviction of a felony, and not be under a judgment of interdiction for mental incompetence.

  • You may register to vote at 16 years old if you are registering in person at the Registrar of Voters Office or at the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles.
  • College students do have a choice of whether they want to vote in Louisiana or vote in their home state. You may only be registered and vote at one location.

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Louisiana for the General Election via in person or by mail is October 18, 2023 and via online is October 28, 2023.

Louisiana offers in-person, absentee, and early voting in the 2023 general election.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

In Louisiana, you must have a reason to be eligible to vote by mail. Eligible reasons to apply for an absentee ballot can be found here. Click here to access Louisiana’s online absentee voting application and here for Louisiana’s printable general absentee voting application.

  • The deadline for military personnel and/or their dependents, U.S. citizens residing outside the U.S., or voters that are hospitalized to apply for an absentee ballot is 4:30pm CST on the day before Election Day. The deadline for all other applicants is 4:30pm CST on the 4th day before Election Day.
  • Absentee ballots for military personnel and/or their dependents, U.S. citizens residing outside the U.S., or voters that are hospitalized must be must be received by the parish Registrar of Voters by 8pm CST on Election Day. Absentee ballots for all other voters must be received by the parish Registrar of Voters by 4:30 pm on the day before Election Day.

Early Voting

Louisiana offers early voting.

  • Early voting for the 2023 General Election will take place from November 3 through November 11 (excluding Sunday, November 5) from 8:30am to 6pm.

Election Day Practices

On Election Day, the polls are open 6am-8pm.

  • At the polls, you must present an acceptable form of photo ID in order to vote. Acceptable forms of ID include a driver’s license, Louisiana special ID, LA Wallet digital driver’s license, U.S. military identification card that contains your name and picture, or some other generally recognized photo ID that contains your name and signature.
