Maine offers same-day voter registration, meaning that voters are able to register to vote in person at their polling place on Election Day on November 3, 2026. Voters can register to vote in-person, online, or by mail by October 13, 2026.
Eligibility
In order to register to vote in Maine, you must be a U.S. citizen, have a fixed residence in Maine, and be at least 17 years old at the time of registration.
- College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in Maine or vote in their home state, as long as they establish a voting residence in Maine.

- Maine residents must be at least 16 to register to vote, must be at least 18 to vote in general elections, and may vote in primary elections if they are 17 years old and will turn 18 by the date of the general election.
- Maine allows individuals who are currently incarcerated for felonies to vote. If you are incarcerated in a correctional facility or in a county jail, you are entitled to register to vote in the Maine municipality where you previously established residency (a fixed and principal home to which you intend to return) prior to incarceration.
- If you are homeless or living in a shelter, you are entitled to register to vote in the Maine municipality where you currently reside, even if you have a non-traditional address such as a park bench or other physical location. Click here for more information about residency.

Deadline
The deadline to register to vote in Maine for the 2026 midterm election is October 13, 2026, which is 21 days before the election. If you are registering to vote by mail, your registration form must be received by this date. Maine offers same-day voter registration at voters’ polling locations on Election Day on November 3, 2026.
Voter Registration Process
There are three options for registering to vote in Maine: online registration, mailing in a printable application, or in-person.

- Eligible voters can register to vote in-person at their county clerks office 21 days or more before of election day or on Election Day at their designated polling location.

Vote-By-Mail Practices
Any registered Maine voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail. Click here to access the Maine Absentee Ballot Request form.
- Can request an absentee ballot online beginning 3 months before Election Day (August 5, 2024) and ending the Thursday (November 2, 2024) before the General Election.
- Absentee ballots must be received by the municipal clerk by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted.

Early Voting
Maine offers early voting.
- Early voting begins 30 days before an election (October 6, 2024)
Election Day Practices
On Election Day, the polls open between 6am-10am (depending on the population of your town) and close at 8pm.
- If you are already registered to vote, there is no need to show ID. If you are choosing to do same day voter registration, you will need ID that provides proof of both identity and residency.
