Eligibility

In order to register to vote in Maine, you must be a U.S. citizen, have a fixed residence in Maine, and at least 17 years old at the time of registration (must be 18 to vote).

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Maine for the General Election is October 15, 2024 (If registering by mail, the application must be received by this date). Same-day voter registration is allowed.

Maine offers in-person, absentee, and early voting in the 2024 General Election.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

Any registered Maine voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail. Click here to access the Maine Absentee Ballot Request form.

  • Can request an absentee ballot online beginning 3 months before Election Day (August 5, 2024) and ending the Thursday (November 2, 2024) before the General Election.
  • Absentee ballots must be received by the municipal clerk by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted.

Election Day Practices

On Election Day, the polls open between 6am-10am (depending on the population of your town) and close at 8pm.

  • If you are already registered to vote, there is no need to show ID. If you are choosing to do same day voter registration, you will need ID that provides proof of both identity and residency.
