Eligibility

In order to register to vote in Maryland, you must be a U.S. citizen, a Maryland resident, and at least 16 years old at the time of registration (must be 18 to vote).

  • Cannot be convicted of buying or selling votes; under guardianship for mental disability and found by a court to be unable to communicate a desire to vote; or convicted of a felony and currently serving a court-ordered sentence of imprisonment.   • If you are an overseas citizen, military personnel, or dependent of military personnel, you may register to vote in Maryland if your current or previous U.S. residence was in Maryland.
  • College students may choose to register to vote at either their home address OR at their college address. Click here for more information.

Deadline

The deadline to register online or vote by mail in Maryland for the General Election (November 3, 2020) is October 13, 2020. Maryland also has same day in-person voter registration.

Maryland offers early and absentee by-mail voting. Voters are encouraged to consider voting using one of these methods in order to minimize their risk of exposure to COVID-19. Additionally, in person voting will take place on November 3, 2020 from 7am to 8pm. Board of Elections’ offices have reopened in Maryland.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

Any registered Maryland voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail. Click here to access the Maryland Application for an Absentee Ballot.

  • The deadline to request an absentee ballot depends on how you want to receive the ballot. Your request must be received by October 20, 2020, if you want to receive your ballot by mail or fax OR on Tuesday, October 30, 2020, if you want to download your ballot from the State’s website.
  • Absentee ballots must be returned to your county board of elections on or before 8:00 pm on Election Day November 3, 2020.
  • Absentee ballots may be mailed and postmarked on or before 8:00 on Election Day.

Maryland offers early voting.

Election Day Practices

On Election Day, the polls are open 7am-8pm.
