New Mexico offers same-day voter registration, meaning that voters are able to register to vote in person at their county clerk’s office on Election Day on November 3, 2026. Voters can register to vote online, in-person, or by mail by October 6, 2026.
Eligibility
In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of New Mexico, be 18 years or older at the time of the next election, not be a convicted felon who has not completed the terms and conditions of a felony sentence, and not be denied the right to vote by a court of law due to reason of mental incapacity.
- Individuals who are currently incarcerated for a felony offense may not vote in New Mexico, but they can register and vote while on probation, parole, or after completing their sentence.
- New Mexico residents who will be 18 by the General Election may vote in the Primary Election at 17 years old.
- College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in New Mexico or vote in their home state, but they may only be registered and vote at one location.

Deadline
The deadline to register to vote in New Mexico for the 2026 midterm election is October 7, 2026, which is 28 days before the election. Voter registration forms submitted by mail must be postmarked by October 7, 2026. New Mexico also offers same-day voter registration at voters’ county clerk’s office on Election Day on November 3, 2026.
Voter Registration Process
There are three methods of registering to vote in New Mexico: online registration, mailing in a completed printable application, or in person.
- New Mexico residents can register to vote in person at an early voting location during the early voting period or at their County Clerk’s office or their polling location on election day.
- If you are registering for the first time in New Mexico, and you submit the registration form by mail, then you must submit with the form a copy of a current and valid photo identification or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card or other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo that shows your name and current address.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

- The deadline to apply is by 5pm on the Thursday prior to Election Day (October 31, 2024).
- Your absentee ballot must be received by 7pm on Election Day in order to be counted.

Early Voting
New Mexico offers early voting.
- Early voting begins at your County Clerks office beginning 28 days before Election Day (October 8, 2024). Early voting at alternate sites begins on the third Saturday before the election (October 19, 2024) in many counties.
