Eligibility

In order to be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of North Dakota, a resident in the precinct for at least 30 days preceding the election, and at least 18 years old on Election Day.

  • College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in North Dakota or vote in their home state as long as they can provide a valid form of identification. More information on voting in North Dakota as a college student can be found here.

Deadline

North Dakota does not require voter registration. Therefore, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements and provide an acceptable form of identification, you can vote on Election Day.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • North Dakota Driver’s License
  • North Dakota Non-Driver’s License
  • Tribal ID or Tribal Letter
  • Long-Term Care Certificate

Vote-By-Mail Practices

  • There is not explicit deadline to request an absentee ballot, but it is recommended that if you are requesting your ballot by mail, that you do so as early as possible to ensure that you allow adequate time to have your ballot mailed to you.
  • Absentee ballots need to be returned by the time polls close on Election Day (November 3, 2026). You can return them by mail, county drop box, or in person to the county auditor.
