Virginia offers same-day voter registration, meaning that voters are able to register to vote in person at their polling place on Election Day on November 4, 2025. Voters can register to vote online or by mail by October 13, 2025.

Eligibility

In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old by Election Day, a resident of Virginia, not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law, and not an incarcerated felon.

  • Virginia residents can register to vote at 17 years old, can vote in primary elections when they will be 18 by the following general election, and can vote in general elections at 18 years old.

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Virginia for the 2025 general election is October 13, 2025, which is 22 days before the election. If voters are registering to vote by mail, their registration form must be postmarked by this date. Virginia offers same-day voter registration at voters’ polling locations on Election Day on November 4, 2025.

 

Voter Registration Process

There are three methods of registering to vote in Virginia: online registration, mail in a printable application, or in-person.

  • Once your voter registration form is submitted, you should receive an information card or other correspondence confirming your registration status. If you do not receive one of these, contact your local Registrar’s Office.
  • Virginia residents can register to vote in-person before the election deadline at a local voter registration office, at their satellite early voting site during the early voting period, or at their precinct on Election Day.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

Any registered voter in Virginia may request an absentee ballot and is not required to provide a reason. Click here to access Virginia’s Vote by Mail Application Form or click here to request your ballot online.

  • The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 11 days prior to Election Day (October 27, 2023).
  • Your completed mailed- in ballot must be postmarked by Election Day and received by 12pm 3 days afters the election (November 30, 2023). Ballots may also be hand-delivered to your local registrar, deposited in a drop box (click here for drop box locations), or submitted online via email by 7 pm on Election Day.
  • It is possible to apply for an emergency absentee ballot. The application must be completed and delivered by 2 pm the day before the election (November 26, 2023), and voted ballots must be returned before the polls close on Election Day.

Early Voting

Virginia offers early voting.

  • Early voting begins 45 days prior to the election (September 22, 2022) and ends the Saturday right before Election Day (November 4, 2023).
