Your voter registration application must be received by October 11, 2021 to be eligible to vote in the General Election. For special elections, you must apply up to 14 days before the election, and for special elections called by the Governor, you must apply up to 7 days before the election.
Eligibility
In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old on or before Election Day, and a resident of Virginia.
- In order to register to vote you cannot be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law. If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored.
- College students may choose to register to vote at either their home address OR at their college address. See more information here.

Voter Registration Process
There are three primary methods of registering to vote in Virginia: registering online, mailing in a printable application, or registering in-person.
- Once your voter registration form is submitted, you should receive an information card or other correspondence confirming your registration status. If you do not receive one of these, contact your local Registrar’s Office.

Vote-By-Mail Practices
Any registered voter in Virginia may request an absentee ballot and is not required to provide a reason. Click here to access Virginia’s Vote by Mail Application Form or click here to request your ballot online.
- By-mail ballots must be requested at your local election office no later than October 22.
- Your completed mail-in ballot/absentee ballot must be postmarked/received on or before Election Day (November 2, 2021). Ballots may be hand-delivered to your local registrar or deposited in a drop box (click here for drop box locations). The ballot must be received by your local registrar by noon on the third day after the election in order to be counted.
- It is possible to apply for an emergency absentee ballot. The application must be completed and delivered by 2 pm the day before the election (November 1, 2021), and voted ballots must be returned before the polls close on Election Day.

Early Voting
Virginia offers early voting.
- Early voting for the General Election begins on Friday, September 17, 2021 and ends on Saturday, October 30, 2021.
