Eligibility

In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by the next general election, and a resident of West Virginia and the county where you plan to register, judged mentally incompetent by a court of law, or serving a sentence for a felony conviction.

  • College students have a choice of whether they want to vote in West Virginia or vote in their home state, but they may only be registered and vote at one location.

Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in Washington for the 2026 midterm election is October 13, 2026, which is 21 days before the election. If voters are registering to vote by mail, their registration form must be postmarked by this date.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

In West Virginia, you must have a reason to be eligible to vote by mail. Eligible reasons to apply for an absentee ballot can be found here. Click here to access West Virginia’s Absentee Ballot Application.

  • The deadline to request an absentee by-mail ballot is six days before the election (October 30, 2024). The application can be returned by mail, scanned, or in-person, but ID is required regardless of the returning method.
  • Your completed ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received no later than 5 days after the election (November 10, 2024). The ballot may be hand-delivered at the Clerk’s office (there are no ballot drop boxes), but no later than the day before the election (November 4, 2024). Track your ballot here.

Early Voting

West Virginia offers early voting.

  • Early voting begins 13 days before the election (October 23, 2024) and ends three days prior to Election Day (November 2, 2024)
