Eligibility

In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 17 years old and will be 18 years old by the next General Election, and a resident of West Virginia (and the county where you registered).

  • In order to register to vote you cannot be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law or be under conviction for a felony. Click here for more information about felons and their voting rights.
  • College students may choose to register to vote at either their home address OR at their college address.

Vote-By-Mail Practices

  • The deadline to request an absentee by-mail ballot is six days before the election (October 28, 2020). The application can be returned by mail, scanned, or in-person, but ID is required regardless of the returning method.
  • Your completed mail-in ballot/absentee ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day (November 3, 2020), unless you are a military or overseas voter. The ballot may be hand-delivered at the Clerk’s office (there are no ballot drop boxes). The ballot must be received no later than five days after the election. Track your ballot here.

Early Voting

West Virginia offers early voting.

  • Early voting, also known as in-person absentee voting, will be available from October 21 to October 31, 2020 at the county courthouse, annex, or designated community voting location during normal business hours and Saturdays 9 am to 5 pm.
